Is there life after death?

Most of us have asked ourselves “Is there life after?” at one point or another. The question has been wrongly interpreted and introduced to us in many different forms. It infers different things to different people, but always implies a deeper question of what occurs or happens after death. Unfortunately, there is no single answer to this intriguing and complex question.

Humans have long been enthralled by the prospect of life after death. The concept of immortality is found in a variety of religious teachings and philosophical opinions. Different religions often have rather elaborate cosmologies and theories on the afterlife; Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism all have their own take on the afterlife. These beliefs often vary, but they in general share the view that something exists outside physical existence.

On the other side of the spectrum, there are those who believe we just end, leaving our bodies in the dirt, and there is nothing else. This absence of religious or spiritual affiliation, is also referred to as nihilism and is particularly attractive to those who think that life has no inherent value. More extreme forms believe that life after death is a myth, and that nothing happens when we die.

The only thing we have to draw on in order to answer the question of life after death is scientific evidence, personal accounts, and testimonials of individuals who have been near death and returned to tell their tales. Most do not remember anything after they lost consciousness, due to oxygen deprivation, but some—most notably cardiac arrest patients—have reported visions of an afterlife or messages from a spiritual figure. Near-death experiences cannot be scientifically examined, though, so drawing conclusions from them is questionable.

Therefore, we cannot conclude that there is life after physical death, only that humans have sought out and speculated about what might be. As long as doubt remains, there is no definitive answer to the age-old question of “is there life after?”. In the end, it is a personal choice that each person must make for themselves; whether to believe in an afterlife or to remain skeptical and accept nothingness.
